It's Been One of Those Weeks for Dallas

Sunday: Romo Returns; Cowboys Win; Season Saved.      Monday: Off; season remains saved.      Tuesday: Tony Romo takes homeless man to movies.      Wednesday: Adam Jones reinstated to team.      Thursday: Felix Jones out for year with toe injury.      Sadly, such a week is the norm in Dallas now.  Which of these events doesn't belong?  The answer is D--Pacman reinstated.  Adam Jones belong in prison, where he cannot do anymore harm to society.  He's had many more chances that he deserves.  You know he is not going to change.  He's a criminal and always will be.  Just 41 days into his "last shot" at the NFL, Jones was suspended for drunkenly brawling with his bodyguards.  Now, after "rehab" he's supposed to be a new man?      PUH-LEASE.      He will let down the team again.  Obviously, this exposes the absolute joke Roger Goodell is willing to let his league become.  For a moment...

49ers fans: Do we really hate Terrell Owens?

Terrell Owens. The savior for the 49ers. The cancer to the 49ers. The savior for the Eagles. The cancer to the Eagles. The savior for the Cowboys. Some kind of disease right now for the Cowboys. As the 49ers and Cowboys prepare for their matchup on Sunday, I just wonder what the thoughts are on the former-49ers and current Cowboy Terrell Owens. Is there still a hatred on the 49ers side on Owens? Is it all forgiven? What about us fans? You guys can talk about how you feel about Owens, but I for one am very indifferent about him.I actually do miss him. I remember when he was a rookie and he was learning so much from Jerry Rice. He complimented the veteran receiver. He would have his dropped balls (which he still does today) but his passion for the game was there. Remember this run against the Jets by Garrison...

Which current NFL players will be in the Hall of Fame?

I'll be fortunate to tell my grandchildren one day that I saw most of the future Hall of Famers listed below. Not on TV, but in person, watching them in games with my binoculars focused on them and observing their actions. Whenever any of them are playing in the NFL stadium closest to you, I hope you'll take advantage of the opportunity to go see them.   The primary criteria I used in selecting these players is not how their stats compare to others already in the Hall, but how they compare to their contemporaries. The players who were the best in their era are the most deserving to be inducted one day. This is measured best, in my opinion, by the number of Pro Bowl appearances and first-team All-Pro honors garnered. Please also note that I am measuring these players by their entire body of work. If a player's career ends today, would he be...

49ers G Chilo Rachal may start against Cowboys

Rookie G Chilo Rachal might be starting this Sunday against the Cowboys. If you may recall, Rachal was getting much praise from Coach Singletary in recent weeks. And Rachal has been getting a lot of playing time in recent weeks. With the retirement of Larry Allen, the Niners needed a hole to be filled at the guard position. But Rachal has earned his spot.As Coach Singletary started to praise the youth movement on the team, we have seen the youth getting more involved in play. We've already seen youngsters WR Josh Morgan and Jason Hill get the playing time over Bryant Johnson and the injured Arnaz Battle. Also, we've seen a lot more of rookie CB Reggie Smith and DE Kentwan Balmer in action. So this comes to no surprise to see Rachal get the nod. During practices or even garbage time, Rachal has given a great effort and has played...

QB Shaun Hill named NFC Offensive Player of the Week

QB Shaun Hill has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week.On Sunday, Hill completed 15-20 passes for 213 yards. He threw for two touchdowns and ran in another one. For five consecutive drives in the first half, Hill led the team to touchdowns. Hill had a perfect passer rating (158.3) in the first half of the game and finished with 142.3. His performance jumpstarted the 49ers into a 35-3 halftime lead and ultimately led the 49ers to their first victory since Week 3. The last 49er to win this award was RB Frank Gore last year in November. Is this is a sign of better things to come for Hill? Maybe the same award next week? Well, I don't know but Hill definitely did some great things on offense on Sunday....

NFL Power Rankings, Week Twelve

1. New York Giants (9-1) The G-men ran all over the Ravens last week in a very impressive performance, which helps to make them early favorites in postseason play.   2. Tennessee Titans (10-0) Just like Ol' Man River, Kerry Collins and the Titans keep rolling on. Their average margin of victory is eleven points per game.   3. Carolina Panthers (8-2) The Panthers are very quietly having a great season. They should continue to be a force as the schedule continues heading into the postseason.   4. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-3) The Steelers defense is playing tough. If Ben Roethlisberger and Willie Parker get healthy, watch out.   5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-3) Can Jon Gruden take the Bucs to the promised land again? They're playing better than their talent says they should.   6. Washington Redskins (7-3) They've dropped a few spots after losing to the Cowboys but they still have the hosses to...

Jonas Jennings to IR; Vote Mike Singletary for Coach of the Week!

T Jonas Jennings has been placed on IR. He looked to be recovering from his shoulder injury, but it was to the point where he knew it couldn't have worked out. In place of Jennings, T Jacob Bender from the Patriots practice squad will fill his roster spot. Niners Nation puts together a nice breakdown of what this means to the team.===Coach Mike Singletary is up for the Motorola Coach of the Week award. Vote for him as often as possible! This what they said about him.Singletary recorded his first career win as head coach of the 49ers in their 35-16 win vs. the St. Louis Rams. 49ers QB Shaun Hill completed 15 of 20 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns as RB Frank Gore rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. 49ers CB Walt Harris made an interception and had a sack to contribute to the...

49ers vs. Cowboys: Rivalry renewed? Probably not

It's Tuesday morning and well, it's going to be a fun day seeing how the Niners can build on their win and try to steal a win away from the Cowboys. But a 49ers-Cowboys matchup just brings back some memories. Well, memories of old times when things were great.Time to take a trip down memory lane because these two don't have that kind of rivalry anymore. But remember when there was that rivalry? It all began with THIS MOMENT. And after that, the 49ers dynasty began.Followed, we have the Cowboys stuffing the Niners for season after season in the early `90s. Then finally, a breakthrough game in the 1994 playoffs. Steve Young got the monkey off his back and sent the Niners to the Superbowl for the fifth time! For me, that game was my greatest 49ers moment. To finally beat the Cowboys! That was what that rivalry was all about. But after...

News and notes from around the NFL

The Jets took over first place in the AFC East with an overtime win at New England Thursday night, boosting their record to 7-3. After a perfect regular season last year, the Patriots are now 6-4 and in second place in the division. Buffalo and Miami each have 5-4 records and are also in the race.   Earlier this week, newly-signed Jets DB Ty Law dared the Patriots to throw the ball in his direction. The Pats did, scoring the touchdown which put the game into overtime after the PAT.  Randy Moss' $20,000 fine won't be levied after all. The league came to its senses and rescinded the fine after receiving flak from players and media alike. Moss' criticism of officiating was mild compared to other criticism and the fine was a knee-jerk reaction, in my opinion.   Falcons DT Grady Jackson, who is currently appealing a four-game league suspension under the substance abuse policy, has sued...Read more

Monday Night Football Fantasy Preview: 49ers vs. Cardinals

Week 10 of Monday Night Football brings us to the Valley of the Sun as the first-place Arizona Cardinals (5-3) welcome the division rival San Francisco 49ers (2-6) to University of Phoenix Stadium.  I'll highlight some things to watch for as a fantasy football owner tonight. QB Shaun Hill and the 49ers' Offense Hill replaced QB J.T. O'Sullivan during the 49ers' last game and makes his first start of the season tonight.  If he plays well, he could keep the job for the rest of the season,  If he has trouble taking care of the ball, as O'Sullivan did, Hill could be on a short leash.  But it would seem unlikely that the team would go back to O'Sullivan so soon if Hill plays poorly. It seems likely that San Francisco will rely on RB Frank Gore and the running game more often with Hill under center.  Gore could also have a...Read more

Monday Night Football preview: Arizona looks to continue NFC West dominance

This week on Monday Night Football, the San Fransisco 49ers and new coach Mike Singletary travel to Arizona to face the NFC West pace-setting Cardinals.  To preview this showdown between the 2-6 49ers and the 5-3 Cardinals, we sat down with Chad of 49ersNews.com and Eli of The Cardinals Report for a pair of quick interviews:Three questions with Chad of 49ersNews.com:1. How hopeful are 49ers fans that Mike Singletary's...unconventional style can turn things around for the franchise?Niner fans are very hopeful, unfortunately the ways things have gone in the past six years, we are not getting our hopes to high. Knowing the organization I wouldn't be surprised if they end up letting Singletary go (regardless of how he does as interim) and end up with someone coaching at the high school level or Rich Kotite.2. What, in your view, is the current outlook for Alex Smith -- with the 49ers and...Read more

A 2008 NFL midseason review

Every team has now played eight games, and some nine, which brings us to the halfway point of the regular season. Now that it's halftime, so to speak, it's a good time to review the first half of the season. Each year, some of the teams predicted to be in strong contention for postseason play don't perform up to expectations and are replaced in the standings by a few surprise teams. We'll also take a look to see who's on a hot streak and who's not, review the most competitive races, and finally, recognize some people for individual accomplishments. How the mighty have fallen: Indianapolis, the second seed in the AFC last year with a 12-4 record, and only two years removed from a Super Bowl title, has limped out to a 4-4 start. The Chargers, the third AFC seed last year, have a 3-5 record, as do the Jaguars,...Read more

News and notes from around the NFL

It's one thing for the Giants to fine and bench Plaxico Burress. Not many people around the country, except for Al Sharpton, paid a lot of attention to an article about it in The New York Post. But when Lawrence Taylor spoke up about the situation, people took notice. LT said Plaxico needs to learn not to put himself above the team.  "I'm all for being an individual. You do your thing. But you're still not above the team. When it starts to disrupt the team, then you have to revisit it and look at it and see if you're doing it right." New England NT Vince Wilfork is probably fortunate that he received only a fine, and not a suspension, from commissioner Roger Goodell. Goodell met with Wilfork on Tuesday to discuss Wilfork's elbow to the head of Denver QB Jay Cutler. I'm a little surprised that Goodell, who's been acting...Read more
