Husker Recruit Close to a Decision, is it Nebraska?
4-Star Quarterback recruit Cody Green is a player a lot of Nebraska fans are salivating over. While the young signal caller has amassed over 30 scholarship offers, he recently trimmed the list of teams he’s considering to two, eliminating such national powers as LSU, and Alabama.
The race for Green’s arm has come down to two conference rivals, Nebraska, and Texas A&M.
After a an already incredibly intense recruiting cycle for the youngster, Green says he thinks he almost ready to announce where he will play football in 2009.
Green told Rivals.com that while he knows where he will be playing, he isn’t quite ready to let everyone else know.
“Yeah, I think I know what I want to do,” he said on Tuesday evening. “I’ll probably commit in a week, maybe sooner. I really don’t know. I don’t think I’ll do it tomorrow or anything; not unless I get a wild hair or something.”
Fans of the two teams are not the only ones holding their breaths and crossing their fingers. Green has said that he has not told either coaching staff yet either, citing the fact that the two teams have said they would give Green his space.
Should Green become a Husker, he would immediately be considered the preeminent recruiting grab by Bo Pelini since he became the head coach at NU
Husker Hoops Picks Up New Player
After the roller coaster drama that was the Robert Sallie fiasco, the Nebraska Basketball coaches were scrambling to not only find another player who could fill in on the upcoming season’s team, but also someone who could be an impact player, possibly leading the team to it’s first NCAA tournament appearance in years.
It appears Doc Saddler has gotten his man, as Hargrave Military Academy standout Eshaunte Jones has made it known that he will be coming to Lincoln this fall.
Jones is a 6 foot 4 guard who had the skills to be recruited by the likes of Tennessee, Indiana, Memphis and Georgetown to name just a few schools who were pursuing the talented shooter.
Eshaunte originally committed to Oregon State in 2007, but was released from his committment when there was a coaching change. Jones will be able to play this season for the Huskers, and his height should help Nebraska compete against some of the other great guards in the Big 12.
Former Husker, Keller Joins the Raiders
Sam Keller never kept it a secret, he wanted to play in the NFL. He pointed to his desire to make the Big Leagues as one of the reasons he transferred from Arizona State, and became a Nebraska Cornhusker three years ago.
That dream seemed to have taken a rather large hit, when Keller was injured in the ‘Huskers second half against the Texas Longhorns. Suffering a separated shoulder, Keller would miss the rest of his final collegiate season.
Despite setting a school record last season by completing 63.1 percent of his passes for 2,422 yards and 14 touchdowns in nine games, Keller was not selected in the NFL draft, and had signed a three year deal to play for the Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena League.
However, yesterday the Oakland Raiders waived quarterback Erik Meyer, and signed Keller to a contract that will allow him to compete for a spot behind incumbent starter Jamarcus Russell.
Keller will compete against former Arizona State teammate Andrew Walter, who was the starting quarterback for ASU when Keller was a freshman, and recently signed Marques Tuiasosop, who is attempting his second stint with Oakland.
Did the Huskers get their guy?
Bo Pelini’s staff is all but complete, with the one notable exception being the runningbacks coach. It has long been known that the final piece to the coaching staff puzzle was a man who’s team was still playing in a bowl game, and it appears now that man is none other than Tim Beck, an assistant coach for the recently victorious Kansas Jayhawks.
While relatively young, Beck has amassed quite a career, most recently as wide receivers coach, and passing game coordinator for a resurgent Jayhawk offense, he’s also served as offensive coordinator at Missouri State, and as a head coach at a couple of Texas High Schools. Beck is considered a top notch recruiter, and should give the Huskers a strong foothold in the talent rich Texas area.
While Beck has not been formally hired, an announcement is expected within the next day or two.
