With Houston Coming, Dikembe is As Good As Gone

Joakim Noah against Ben Wallace - watkinscbw

Ever since the Houston Rockets made a trade involving Steve Francis going to Memphis for a second round draft pick, and trade rumors flying around involving Charlie Villanueva leaving Milwaukee, and the Rockets shipping out Carl Landry, there have been strong rumors about Dikembe Mutombo coming to Houston. A few weeks before that, it was rumored that he might come to Boston. After Dikembe, our options are P.J. Brown and Stephon Marbury. They don't exactly jump out at me like Antonio McDyess or Dikembe did. Could we make a trade? Might we sign a player that will jump out and surprise us? Will he be enough for Boston, and Boston fans? Its time to bring out the option table again.Free AgentsP.J. Brown - Brown, who played for the Celtics last year, retired after he finally won a championship with Boston, but now might be coming back to the Celtics to...

Did you see Redd pouting... and where was the crowd?

Let me get out my Cub Scout Leadership manual here.  Okay.  Let's see.  A, B, okay, Basketball... "When benched in a basketball game a leader should... Yep, here it is "mumble into his towel to the guy next to him on the bench... this is often considered one of the most effective ways to show selflessness and to help rally the team back into the game." Come on Mike.  What are you, like two years old?  I mean, you're making umpteengazillion bucks, right?  The team meets its payroll, right?  And you probably live in River Hills, and drive a phatty whatever... geez, can't you put on a happy face?  Can't you find it in your heart to stand up, yell and cheer and possibly show some veteran leadership to help out the green and growing Milwaukee Bucks... the TEAM THAT FREEKIN PAYS YOU? Where was the Hometown crowd? This is an old one.  But with...

Alexander in the dunk contest? Come on, dude!

Shouldn't the dunk contest be reserved for guys who have earned the right to clown?  Shouldn't you demonstrate that you can execute the fundamentals of the game before you spend one second on mapping out a blindfolded dunk over a picnic table while doing a sumersault in an Indiana Jones outfit?  I know, I know, you can name five gagillion examples of guys who were scrubs who participated, but can't Joe Alexander be the one of the ones who says "No, I think its more important that I work on my game"? To me, the dunk contests... and here's an admission, I haven't watched one of them since, Dee Brown... no, I must have seen one since then... was Kobe ever in one?  Anyway, they should be reserved for the game's marquee players, the guys who are going to All-Star Weekend anyway. What's that you say, "No marquee performer other than Clark Kent...

Doesn't look like today's the watershed day

Today looked like the day the Bucks maybe were going to turn a permanent corner.  I do not want to jinx things and say anything more than that, but if they were willing to trade Charlie Villanueva -- inefficient scorer -- for Carl Landry or Nick Collison -- win producers, it means either they get, they got it, or they probably already had it. But that's all premature. No offense to Gary Woelfel of the Racine Times Journal -- who at least tries to get BucksNation some inside information -- but I sort of consider him the first whisper (which is fine -- yet everyone pees on him -- this is now a PG13 blog -- in his comments section, although most of it is for his Packer opinions I think). Also, if and when anything gets done, I'll comment after considering the situation, hopefully carefully.  I'm not going to try to be fast and spout...

Milwaukee Bucks Win Profile at the One-third Mark

EDITORIAL NOTE: I have just learned from Pressey25 that things may be in flux, and for the better.  Let's not jump the gun, because rumors are all over the place and we don't want to jinx them, but we may get PF Carl Landry and C Chris Mihm, in exchange for PF Charlie Villanueva and PG Tyronn Lue.  Lue has been up and way down, Villanueva has gotten his act together.  I love Landry, no question, but there is one thing on my mind... will he make Moute redundant?  In other words, isn't he just a superior version of Luc Moute?  I don't know that they would have enough scoring punch to play together... its what I call the "Rodman Conundrum" of the Win Score metric... I'll explain that in my next post... its actually kind of interesting (basically, what it means is although Dennis Rodman is an out of this world Win Scorer, you...

Did the Bucks solve their backup center problem... without knowing it?

Once again, I'm doing that stupid Win Profile, which I will not have any comments on when it is completed because I am commenting on it as I do it, but I think the Bucks may have solved their nagging backup center problem. For one, you have Dan Gadzuric, otherwise known as "One Day Nate Thurmond, Six Days Randy Breuer".  So he can do the job on occasion.  Then you have Francisco Elson.  Ho, ho... I just wanted to use the "strikethrough" that I have on this blog but didn't have on the other.  You don't have Francisco Elson! But guess what?  You know who I think MAY be secretly good?  Austin Croshere!!  He can't play power forward anymore because of either age or injury (have you seen him move around... I commented at the time, I thought Joe Alexander was Croshere and I thought Croshere was the unfrozen Randy...

Did I see the same Celtic-Laker game Gottlieb saw?

Hey Doug Gottlieb, stick to amateur hoops... He's pointing to the Celtics loss yesterday as a sign that they have serious problems with their bench and that they desperately miss James Posey.  He claims they can't win an NBA title with their current constitution of players.  Not only did Gottlieb say the Celtics missed Posey (which is true, but WAY OVERBLOWN by the media) he also claims... get THIS... that they miss PJ BROWN!!!... Anyone who read my blog during the NBA Finals knows that PJ Brown, Sam Cassell, and Ronnie Turiaf were the three worst "Total Win Contributors" on the floor during the championship round.  Here's my alternate take on the state of the Celtics based upon the Xmas game.  They played an ehhh, okay game.  I'll grant that.  Too many turnovers.  But still... they nearly beat the best team in the Western Conference at their home gym where they...

Is Luc Moute the new Bobby Dandridge??

I'm slowly putting together the Bucks Win Profile.  I'm up to the magnificent Luc Moute, power forward (somehow) for the Milwaukee Bucks.  If you told me before the draft that this guy was a power forward prospect, with his less than adequate standing reach (8'7''... NBA power forwards average 8'10'' according to draftprospect) and less than adequate strength or size (he gives up at least 40 pounds to his cover every night), I would have told you "That's a joke". But in Moute's case the most important statistical measurement is the dude's heart.  It's large.  He doesn't quit.  He's like a boxer who moves up in weight class and insists on showing the big boys he can trade leather with them... so he stands toe-to-toe every night.   And if he goes down he gets back up. He's such a strange phenomenon, he forces the mind toward historical precedent.  At first I thought of Sidney...

Note: We at MVN Outsider have re-organized our posting schedule in an effort to make our sports coverage more well rounded and timely. For those of you expecting to see the NBA Power Rankings today, that post has been moved to Tuesdays. With these changes, get ready to see more fresh content every day on every major sport. Thanks, and enjoy!Rising:Boston Celtics - Honestly, this team has been on the rise this entire season, piling up wins at a rate that we haven't seen since the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls. They now have won 18 in a row and have tied the league mark for the best start (26-2) for a team with two losses. Their recent success has been due in large part to the play of point guard Rajon Rondo. When the team needs him to score, he does it (as we saw on Sunday in the C's win...Read more

NBA Stock Market: CP3 steals way into record books

Chris Paul shoots over Leon Powe of the Celtics (Photo via flickr.com/Eric Kilby)

With everything that happened during yesterday's busy night in the NBA, there's a lot to get to, so I'll just get right to it: here's the league's big movers and shakers.Rising:New Orleans Hornets - Not only did the Hornets mount an impressive comeback win over the Spurs last night (their tenth win in the last 12 games, putting them in first place in their division), but they also got to see some history. During the second quarter, Chris Paul stole an intended pass from Tony Parker, establishing CP3 as the NBA record-holder for most consecutive games with a steal (106).Paul broke a record that stood since 1986, and by the time the streak ends it's likely that it won't be broken for many more decades. The next longest streak by an active player is 22, by Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo. With apologies to Parker, Nash and D-Will, all excellent...Read more

NBA Fantasy Tracker: Look to Mason for points, threes

Every Wednesday, I'll highlight players who you should either add to your fantasy team if you need the help or put on your watch list. I'll also list a few players that should have their bags packed and may be on their way to free agency in your league.ADD/WATCH LISTRoger MasonMason was asked to step into a bigger role with the injuries to Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, and so far he's been up to the challenge. In the Spurs most recent game against the Clippers, he had 21 points, including the game-winning three-pointer. Mason has shown he is not hesitant to shoot, and you should not hesitate to pick him up if he is a free agent in your league.Marquis DanielsDaniels has been a nice surprise for the Pacers. He's getting a lot of playing time and plenty of shots, averaging close to 15 points, 6 rebounds and 2.7...Read more

Top ten surprises of the NBA season so far

With most teams past the 10 game point in the NBA season, subplots and storylines are emerging. While the Lakers and Celtics are clearly the top teams in the league, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers are playing well as the best of the rest. Other teams have not been up to the challenge. Heading in to Tuesday's action, here are the top ten surprises of the NBA season so far... 10. Mark Cuban's alleged insider trading - The league's most entertaining and passionate owner has been on the wrong side of David Stern before. He has a reputation for being a bit of a rogue, but always follows the law. The most surprising aspect of the story to me is public reaction fueled by speculation. Sure, the NBA is still reeling from image issues of the Tim Donaghy scandal two summers ago. But every piece of gossip is not...Read more
